Curriculum Vitae


MS degree in Chemistry from Univ. Milano with honours (1989). Prize for best student in Chemistry of the Univ. Milano (1990). Ph.D. in Chemistry (1993), NSF post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley (1994-95), NATO fellow at the Univ. Erlangen-Nuernberg,Erlangen(1995).

Faculty position

Assistant Professor (1995),  Associate Professor (2001), Full Professor (2010) in Organic Chemistry and Materials. University of Milano-Bicocca.

Main Duties

Dean of the undegraduate programs in Chemistry of the University of Milano-Bicocca.

National Coordinator of the Interdivisional Group for Renewable Energy of the Italian Society of Chemistry (EnerCHEM)

Director of the Solar Energy Research Center MIB-SOLAR of the University of Milano-Bicocca

Member of the International Advisory Board of EurJOC (Wiley)

Member of consultants board for MIUR for Programme Horizon 2020, challenge “Energy”

Member of the scientific committee of the Fondazione Tronchetti Provera (Pirelli). Application reviewer for MIUR-Italian Ministry of University and Research, University of Milano, University of Padova, NSF, INSTM-Italian University Consortium on Materials Science and Technology; peer-reviewer for many international scientific journals (ACS, RSC, Wiley, Elsevier).


Co-author of a university textbook in Heterocyclic Chemistry, ca. 125 publications in peer- and editor-reviewed international scientific journals (H index of 25 and ca. 2000 citations) including 18 patents (10 international) and 4 book chapters, and ca. 30 invited talks.

At the present he is the P.I. of a few projects with private companies (eni, Pirelli) and local P.I. of a MIUR-PRIN 2012-14 and of MIUR-Regione Lombardia 2012-14 on organic and hybrid photovoltaics. He has participated in the past 5 years to a number of projects from MIUR-FIRB, MIUR-PRIN, INSTM, CNR, Fondazione Cariplo, EU-FP6 and FP7. Main current scientific interests include materials and devices for organic and hybrid photovoltaics, opto-electronics, and (nano)photonics

Attività di Ricerca

Current scientific interests involve design, synthesis and characterization of organic and organometallic materials and devices for solar energy, artificila photosynthesis, photonics, and optoelectronics.

Main topics include:

  • organic and organometallic materials for photovoltaic cells (dye-sensitized DSC cells, polymeric-molecular solar cells, tandem DSC-CIGS solar cells)
  • fabrication and characterization of photovoltaic cells and modules
  • artificial photosynthesis: solar induced water splitting, CO2 reduction, solar fuels
  • semiconducting polymers
  • molecular and polymeric optical sensors for water contaminants and explosives


He is currently collaborating with many national and international research groups including: University of Milano-Bicocca (R. Ruffo, M. Acciarri, S. Binetti, C. Riccardi, R. Simonutti), University of Milano (R. Ugo, M. Pizzotti, D. Roberto), IIT-Polimi (F. Di Fonzo), University of Padova (C. Ferrante), CNR-Perugia (F. De Angelis), University of Parma (A. Painelli), University of Genova (D. Comoretto), University of Pavia (F. Marabelli), CNR-Bologna (M. Muccini), University of Ferrara (C. Bignozzi), University of Firenze (A. Mordini, P. Foggi), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology-Lausanne (M. K. Nazeeruddin, M. Grätzel).
At the present he is involved as P.I., local P.I. or participant in a number of research projects from national and international government agencies (MIUR-FIRB, MIUR-PRIN, CNR, EU-FP7) and private companies and foundations (Cariplo Foundation, ENI, Pirelli Corimav).
